The Scanner: Undergraduate Journal of Scandinavian and Nordic Studies is the University of British Columbia’s premier undergraduate journal for Scandinavian and Nordic Studies, where we publish papers spanning a number of topics and disciplines, from history to literature to anthropology and more so long as they feature a strong focus on Scandinavia or Norden.
The Scanner originally started as a small student-led journal to complement the Nordic Studies program at UBC, brought about by a few dedicated students in the program. Recently, it has expanded to welcome academic and photographic submissions from all across North America, with the intention to strengthen Scandinavian and Nordic Studies as a discipline in North America among undergraduate students and foster a sense of community among students studying in/looking to further their work in Scandinavian and Nordic Studies outside of Europe, across the pond.

The Scanner: Undergraduate Journal of Scandinavian and Nordic Studies would like to acknowledge that we publish our journal on the traditional, ancestral, and stolen territory of the xwmÉ™θkwÉ™yÌ“É™m (Musqueam) nation. As a journal focusing on Norden and engaging in discussions regarding Nordic/Scandinavian relations with Sámi peoples and land, as well as Sámi perspectives, we are committed to working towards a global understanding of Indigeneity and Indigenous rights and struggles against imperialism and colonialism, whether in Indigenous North America, or Sápmi.
